Why is Nigel Mansell doing this challenge?
Nigel is the President of UK Youth and wants to raise awareness of
the organization during its centenary year.He also wants to promote
“Positive about Youth” a campaign that was launched by our Patron
HRH the Princess Royal on 18 February.Last, but by no means least,
he want to raise funds and long-term sponsorships for UK Youth.
When was the Challenge launched?
Our patron HRH the Princess Royal launched the challenge during the reception at St James’s Palace celebrating our centenary. There were 500 guests representing all the strands of UK Youth’s work, from Art for Youth to Youth Achievement Foundations.
Who else is involved in the Challenge?
Nigel will be cycling with his two sons, Leo and Greg and two friends. The friends are Magnus Backstedt, an ex-professional cyclist who regularly took part in the Tour de France, and Ian Williams. Everyday they will be joined by 6 sponsored riders.
When is the challenge taking place?
The Peloton will leave Kensington Palace, London at 08.30 on 22 July and will finish at Buckingham Palace, London on 3 August. That’s 13 days cycling with no rest days – just some shorter “recovery” days.
What is the route?
'The Route' page on this website shows the main towns they will be passing through and the schedule.
How fast will they be going?
Pretty fast! They will be averaging 18 mph and on the longest days will be in the saddle for a round 7 hours. So it really is a challenge, if you are thinking applying to be a sponsored rider that’s what you will need to be able to do. Are there any events planned along the route?
Yes, lots, these will be in Cardiff, Chester, Blackpool, Glasgow, Darlington, Leicester and Leighton & Linslade.
What are the sponsorship opportunities?
Do you want to ride with Nigel – or sponsor others who do?
Could you help meet the not inconsiderable accommodation costs?
Are you prepared to sponsor a day, or more, and feature in our daily blogs, on vehicle signage and PR activity?
How about paying for some of the petrol used by the escort vehicles?
These are just a few of the ways in which you could help us – but you may also have ideas and we’d be very happy to discuss them with you.
What is the fundraising target?
We want to raise £1million over and above any costs we incur for staging the Challenge.
How can I / we help with fundraising?
You can do a number of things. The simplest is to sponsor the Peloton or individuals, either by the mile or a for a fixed amount.Or you may want to organize some sort of “en-route” event that can act as the focus for local fundraising.
We can’t stop to meet and greet but we will wave as we pass through. The one thing that you will not be able to do, unless you are a sponsored rider, is join the Peloton.
What is “Positive about Youth” about?
UK Youth are celebrating our 100th birthday! We are using our centenary to change perceptions about young people.
We want to invest in their potential, increase their opportunities and promote wider recognition of their achievements. Therefore the theme of our centenary year is “Positive about Youth”. You can play a part in making a difference for young people by pledging your support at www.positiveaboutyouth.org
What is Bike Club?
Bike Club aims to encourage young people to use cycling as a means of transport so they can take part in more activities beyond the school day, and discover the freedom cycling brings. It seeks to make cycling an important part of young people’s lives – as recreation, sport, exercise, a ‘green’ form of transport – and just for fun!
